So let’s say that you have – or you run, let’s not quibble on the details – an advertising website. You know that, with the website, you’re going to get lots of hits from people who are looking for batteries and toilet paper – which, admittedly, are a rather unusual cross-section of society, but still. You expect the hits to roll in, along with the corresponding profits. But, for some reason, the profits don’t begin to stack up, and the hits aren’t really as numerous as you would have wished them to be. What should you do?
Well, there are of course some things that you can do. For instance, you can curl up in the fetal position and cry yourself to sleep every night because your plan didn’t work. But, if you’re an adult, then it’s probable that this won’t really be a profitable pursuit, since if you do so, you won’t really get anywhere. So, in the interests of going forward, you should probably find a way to remedy the situation. And an excellent way to do that is to go the route of search engine optimization. However, for those unfamiliar with that term, it is perhaps necessary to explain it and expound on it a little. So, let’s break it down into its component words and see what it means.

A search engine is a bit of software or a website or some other doodad that allows you to search through a great amount of logged information in a very short amount of time by entering certain keywords into the engine. Optimization is the process or the act of making something more fitting or functional for a certain purpose. Now, when one speaks of search engine optimization in the context of websites, one means a rather specific thing. Therefore, if the website is about things like, again, alkaline batteries, then the articles would most likely be written about alkaline batteries but contain certain keywords that will optimize the article, and thus the site.
A good byproduct of this process is that you will begin to get clicks on your website. These clicks, depending on how you’re working out the deal with the people who you’re contracted from, will many times translate out to money for you. The rate of pay will most likely be determined by a process called pay per click (or PPC). Basically, depending upon the amount of clicks that your website receives, a certain rate of pay will be generated. Therefore, the more that you tweak the website for SEO, the more clicks you will receive, and the more you will get paid. Hence, it’s clearly a beneficial idea to do this.
